Three top tips for sleeping with a hair system to boost longevity

Sleep is really important. You literally can’t live without it and getting a solid eight hours a night has loads of health and wellbeing benefits.

Wearing a hair system is also great. It’s an affordable and easy-to-use solution for concealing hair loss that actually works. It probably has less health benefits, but it can definitely help people with their self-esteem and therefore their mental health.

However, one of the comments we often get from hair system users is that they fear that the way they sleep is damaging their system and reducing its longevity.

This doesn’t have to be the case, however, and we’ve here got three top tips to help you sleep well while maximizing the durability of your system.

Three top tips for sleeping with a hair system to boost longevity

But first, why would sleeping damage your hair system? First of all, you should remember that everyone loses hair throughout the day and night, whether you’re suffering with hair loss or not. So everyone loses some hair during the night.

When you sleep, you can lose hair because of the friction that occurs between your head and the pillow. Your head is pressed down against it for hours on end, remember.

Unless you’re someone who sleeps completely still, which you’re probably not, you’re likely to be tossing and turning a bit through the night, so your hair is going to be rubbing against the pillow in all sorts of different ways.

For hair system users, the likelihood of friction arising is amplified by the fact that you have fewer of the natural oils that people with their original hair have, so your hair is generally drier, creating greater friction.

What can you do? The answer is not to not sleep. Sleep is great and you need it!

But there are a few easy things you can do to minimize the friction that sleeping on a pillow can cause, helping you to increase the longevity of your system.

The first thing to think about is the material your pressing your head against – i.e. your pillow case. Cotton or textile-based pillow cases are generally rougher and will cause greater friction against your hair.

For this reason, we recommend investing in a silk pillow case. Sure they’re probably a little more expensive, but they’ll be softer against your hair, meaning there’ll be less friction between your head and the pillow. You’ll probably make the money back by getting an extra month or two out of your system.

And an additional bonus, a silk pillow case is also nicer and smoother to sleep against, helping you get a better night’s sleep as well as better durability in your system.

When it comes to your hair system, your biggest bogeyman is tangles. Tangled hair becomes weaker and more susceptible to breakage, so brushing out your system before sleep will definitely help to avoid the possibility of hair loss during the night.

You don’t have to have hair loss to know that sleeping with wet hair is generally not a good idea. For hair system users, this is doubly true.

Hair in general is at its weakest when wet, leaving it more susceptible to breakage. It’s also more likely to tangle and if drying pressed against the pillow, friction can again arise.

And finally, if you’re wearing a longer hair style, you may want to consider braiding it before going to sleep to ensure it maintains its integrity and doesn’t get tangled.
