The water you use to wash your hair is important. Washing with hard water can leave your hair feeling dried out and brittle, regardless of the shampoos and conditioners you’re using.
The same goes for hair systems. Washing with hard water can lead to your system losing its bounce and volume.
Why does this happen? Water picks up various minerals like calcium and magnesium as it travel through pipes and to your taps. These minerals aren’t hugely harmful to your general health, but they can damage your hair.
They don’t mix particularly well with your products, producing a residue that remains on your scalp and in your hair. This residue dries out your hair, blocks moisturizers, and promotes tangles and breakage.
If this goes unattended, it can give the appearance of thinning for people who have kept their natural hair. For those of you wearing a hair system, it can lead to your hair losing its bounce and volume.
What can you do about it? Getting a hard water filter will have a huge impact and it’s a pretty cheap solution too, costing anything between $20 and $60.
A filter eradicates unwanted dirt and chemicals from your water – including chlorine, limescale, heavy metals and bacteria. They last a pretty long time too – usually at least six months or so.
It’s definitely a worthwhile investment, helping your system to retain its volume and bounce for much longer, leaving you with nicer, silkier hair.
